Today's walk report: 031614

Yesterday and today.

A couple of beautiful days and matinée walks with my girl, Docken.

Yesterday we headed out in the late A.M. because we had a party to attend in the evening. If you knew me you'd know that's an unusual event, me+party. In fact I probably haven't been to an adult party in 15+ years. The company made all the difference and the party folks were splendid too.

031514: A short walk to the botanical garden and around, about 6.5 km. Not much on the photo front. It was windy, time stood still...

Palo Verde flowers.
Unknown yucca in a parking lot.
One of the "regular" red-tailed hawks. I hadn't seen him in quite awhile now and it was a 1st sighting for a walk with Docken.

031614: Back to Corbin Canyon.

Docken and I walked to Corbin Canyon on 021314 and I posted that walk here. It was a lot greener today after finally getting about 4" of rain in February.

The bush this bee was on was completely a buzz with 100s more bees.

Honestly, we could not figure out the rest of this message so I left it with "LA."

It may sound frivolous but butterflies and rainbows have been an important theme in my life as of late.

Bothwell Ranch the the last commercial orange grove in the San Fernando Valley.

You wouldn't believe the racket this little woodpecker was making on this telephone pole, so I won't bother trying to explain.

That's all! We hit 90º f today and it's still officially winter, although climatically we in SoCal had given up on the season some time ago. Nevertheless, beautiful walks in lovely company. Thanks for coming along!

Corbin Canyon Park.

We made it this time!

On our way...

Some variety of Bauhinia, aka, Orchid tree, nicely pruned.

My wonderful companion, Docken, at the entrance to the canyon.

Corbin Canyon
These 328 acres were acquired in 2001 by Santa Mountain Conservancy
of the State of California
Joseph T. Edmiston, Executive Director (and person who had to have his name on this plaque)
Acquisition made possible by
Tarzana Homeowners Association
Transferred to
California State Parks in 2002

Garter snake, we almost didn't see this little fellow crossing the trail.

Rest stop?

Even when the scenery wasn't so nice I had a beautiful view, aka, Docken walkin' and walkin' with Docken.

The canyon is desperately in need of rain but despite the dryness there were many signs of fresh green growth coming in. It'll be interesting to revisit the canyon in a couple of months.

Shadows heading home.

Home and baby snapdragons. Total walk, 10.41 km or 6.47 miles.

Today's walk report: 021114

Wrong turn.

I walked with my sweet and adorable companion again today thinking I had the proper route mapped out in my head into Corbin Canyon Park. CCP, as the crow flies, is just 3.1 km (1.93 miles) from home base. However, since we're not crows, the walk is 4.68 km (2.91 miles.)

I had forgotten the detour one needs to make to get to the park, there's a zig-zag. I'm used to making zig-zags but this one simply slipped my mind. Despite that, we had a really wonderful 7.5 km or 4.67 mile walk on a beautiful day with close to 80º temps.

I have the route written down now, so... next time.

The Bothwell Ranch orange grove, just past this we should've made a left but instead we went straight. The Bothwell Ranch is the largest independent orange grove left in Southern California, a mere 14 acres, a fraction of the some 15,000 acres of orange groves this valley boasted of just 75 years ago.
