Today's no walk report: 102420
Another minimalist post via backyard excursions. Actually, I've been spending a good deal of time there trying to separate plumbago bushes from bougainvillea bushes, both moderate spreaders and intertwined. To be honest, I'm not digging it. Bending over duties currently top my list of least favorite things to do. Anyway, this little diversion is Copestylum mexicanum. aka, the Mexican cactus fly. It was identifiable by the white flap on each wing. That flap is known as a calypter. It's a species of syrphid fly or hoverfly. They are often considered the second most important group of pollinators after bees. The abdomen is a brilliant iridescent dark blue and I really wanted to capture it in flight to better show off the color. Oh well.
